SUMMARY:Emergency Virtual Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:FFLIC and youth justice partners\, will host a virtual emergency town hall in response to the Governor’s plan to move youth to Angola. SUMMARY:Vigil for Incarcerated Youth
DESCRIPTION:Following news of the Governor’s plan to move youth from Bridge City to Angola\, Louisiana’s youth justice partners and families will hold a candlelight vigil tonight\, Thursday\, July 21\, from 6:30 to 7:00 PM in front of Bridge City Center for Youth. \nYouth justice advocates oppose the Governor’s decision as an egregious act of institutional violence and violation of human rights. Youth need safe\, healthy environments and supportive rehabilitative services. Instead\, the state continues to ignore the needs of young people and their communities and perpetuate a cycle of harm. Punitive approaches that expose youth to additional violence and abuse are proven to be ineffective and harmful. \nGina Womack\, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children\, states\, “The Governor’s plan to house youth at Angola State Prison is cruel and outrageous. Angola is an adult facility built on former slave quarters that is historically known for horrific violence\, abuse\, and sexual assaults caused by institutional and systemic violence. DESCRIPTION:#GivingTuesday\, taking place on November 30th\, is a day of generosity and gratitude\, and we want to thank you for supporting our work to #LetKidsBeKids and end youth incarceration. This year Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children (FFLIC) is commemorating our 20th anniversary of building intergenerational Black female leadership in the fight for the rights of youth targeted by systems of incarceration and their families. FFLIC was founded in 2001 on the belief that those most directly impacted should lead permanent change. At that time\, parents\, many of them Black mothers\, came together to support one another in advocating for their children who were caught up in Louisiana’s brutal and ineffective youth incarceration system. \nLooking back\, we are proud of our successes in the past twenty years\, including our first campaign and the landmark closing of Tallulah Youth Correctional Facility in 2003. This is especially true because our experience has told us that it’s harder for Black-led organizations to survive and thrive. For the past two decades\, FFLIC has continued our fight to eradicate youth prisons\, build collective power for directly impacted families\, help pass critical legislation\, and advocate for healthy functioning networks of support through our #LetKidsBeKids platform. \nFFLIC is now closer than ever to realizing our founding goals with the launch of our youth-led  LA HOOP Coalition (Harvesting Opportunities Outside of Prison) and their #NoMorePrisons campaign. DESCRIPTION:We are hoping you will join FFLIC for our 20th Anniversary Mock Jazz Funeral memorializing the lost dreams of our children. This year we are adding a Trunk or Treat to be held on Saturday\, October 30\, at 12 noon in Monroe\, LA. We will be convening near the Ochsner LSU Medical Center of Monroe on Jackson around 11:30 AM and from there we will caravan (by car or walking) to Swanson-Monroe Youth Facility for a press conference and goodie bag giveaway. This October event is part of Youth Justice Awareness month\, #YJAM \nThis family friendly event is based in Monroe to fight the rebuild of the youth prison and to raise community awareness to the disparate and inhumane treatment of youth of color. It’s especially important to take action now that Governor Edwards recently spoke about the need for the new youth prison\, after being silent on the many atrocities our youth have faced during a pandemic and hurricane. \nWe will also be sharing a community invitation to a listening session in Monroe in the upcoming weeks to discuss community concerns\, alternatives to punitive systems\, how to better invest prison construction dollars in the local community\, and how communities can take action to build holistic networks of support for youth and ensure every young person has the opportunity to live a full and productive life. \nRegister here. \nYou can also share about the event!
